Gertrude is a not-for-profit independent art organisation located in Melbourne, Victoria.
For nearly 40 years, Gertrude has propelled the careers of Australia’s most celebrated artists, built and engaged broad public audiences, and shaped the ideas of our time. Its demonstrated impact on contemporary arts practice is
recognised both nationally and internationally.
As a non-commercial, independent space, Gertrude offers artists the freedom for risk-taking, innovation and ambition. We connect their works with creative audiences through highquality exhibitions, and public and education programs. Crucially, Gertrude expands knowledge around the social, cultural, and political issues at play in contemporary Australia, contextualises our place in the world, and actively creates an inclusive environment while remaining challenging and unique.
Our artistic program – including our studio and exhibition programs – is distinct in its equal emphasis on the production and presentation of contemporary art. It
connects Australian artists with their international peers, contextualising local issues and practices with broader global ideas. Gertrude is exemplary in exhibiting works at the forefront of cultural output rather than retrospective
or museological.
Alongside our gallery spaces, our Preston South site includes 16 artist studios. These studios enable us to nurture and support innovative artists as they explore
new ideas and present ambitious work at pivotal points in their careers.
Artists frequently cite their exhibitions at Gertrude as important turning points in the development of their practices. Through curatorial and logistical support, Gertrude assists artists in creating the momentum that takes their practices to new levels of institutional and commercial interest.
