Tea that satisfies the most discerning tea connoisseur; a school that gives free education to youth to break the cycle of poverty in a developing nation; a business that seeks to use its influence to improve communities at home and abroad: these compelling threads come together under Felicitea, distributor in Canada for Beacon Hill Tea.
Sri Lankan tea is famous worldwide for its quality, yet the fact that the majority of the tea industry makes profits off of the backs of the voiceless and powerless poorest of the poor – the tea pluckers – often goes unacknowledged. To work towards a better future for tea pluckers and their families, Beacon Hill Tea sources its tea from one of the few Sri Lankan plantations that is both organic and follows fairtrade practices.
Beacon Hill Tea was created in 2006 as a creative way of raising fnds for a unique school in Sri Lanka: Beacon Hill Academy (BHA). BHA is a community-college style institution that offers free education to underprivileged youth in the central and rural area of Sri Lanka. The school has a tremendous impact on the lives of its students and their extended families by assisting them in breaking the cycle of poverty and creating hope in families and communities. Felicitea partners with BHA by sending a portion of the profits from the sale of each box of tea back to support the school’s operational costs.
