Expedition Balance 501(c)(3) supports the recovery of US combat veterans by offering a balanced approach to wellness through group outdoor recreation, spiritual awareness and contemplation, creative expression, physical fitness, and healthy lifestyle education.
We serve the veteran community by providing an active support and educational environment via outdoor expeditions and ongoing local services. Both venues demonstrate the long-term benefits of a non-clinical approach to overcoming emotional and mental distress caused by service during wartime.
Expeditions are journeys in a natural environment where participants are exposed to principles and practices known to improve physical, spiritual, and mental health. Expedition Balance employees and outside specialists demonstrate activities that can be adopted by those suffering from PTSD and similar stress-related ailments. By giving participants tools they can use and practice at home, they are more likely to improve their overall condition, whether or not they engage in medicinal therapy, psychotherapy, or other types of counseling. These events take place in a variety of beautiful, serene, and challenging outdoor environments, including: national and state parks, and other locations in and outside of Texas.
Community services are provided to support the local combat veteran population, teaching the same practices demonstrated in the expeditions. Expedition Balance will operate a Houston facility that will employ licensed instructors and therapists to serve veterans and their immediate family members. The facility will provide the post-expedition support necessary to reinforce wellness practices introduced on the outings, as well as serving veterans who have not yet attended an expedition. Until resources are available to create the Houston facility, Expedition Balance will partner with other organizations to offer veterans these services in a variety of existing facilities and environments.
