The English-Speaking Union is a world-wide educational charity, dedicated since 1918 to the promotion of international friendship and human achievement through the English language. Millions are eager to use English to widen their personal opportunities in life and to bridge the divisions of distance and culture. English helps promote global understanding, and the ESU exists to help this happen.
The ESU has had a presence in Scotland since the early 1920s, but since 1952 ESU Scotland has been an independent member of our international family, now represented in over 50 countries.
From our Edinburgh base, we work closely with our fellow ESUs around the world on a wide variety of international programmes. At home we concentrate on developing speech and debate skills among young people; teaching English to non-native speakers; and offering training in communications skills to adults.
We co-operate closely with other organisations in offering a range of cultural and educational programmes, and provide many opportunities for members to become involved as volunteers and helpers.
The main objectives of the ESU are to:
Provide a forum for international friendship through the worldwide network of ESUs
Facilitate and assist the establishment and recognition of ESUs worldwide
Focus on key current affairs issues through regular international conferences, seminars and meetings
Promote English in international public speaking and debate for the support of worldwide communication and dialogue
Encourage the enjoyment and constructive use of English through educational programmes
Initiate and administer international youth exchange and work experience schemes
Provide and create cultural activities
Ensure the coordination and coherence of our activities through the skill and dedication of our staff and voluntary helpers
Work in close and innovative partnership with our corporate members and sponsors
