The Duarte Georgetown Estate is a high elevation vineyard planted at 2,500' elevation in a remote area of California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
The Georgetown Divide is an isolated portion of the El Dorado County rising between the City of Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. There is no easy way to get atop the Georgetown Divide. It is formed by the middle and southern forks of the American river and its access protected by a winding journey through steep river canyons by any approach.
Once discovered the wine growing potentials have been amazing. Deep red clay loam soils with rich nutrition and even drainage give the vines a perfect balance of sustenance and challenge. The high mountain elevation delays bud-break and brings a short spring followed by a bright warm summer. The delayed start pushes harvest late into the fall. The ripening grapes hang in the cool dry air building cool rand richness while holding their aromatics and acids. Sugars climb high as the grapes develop deep color and structure to carry the higher alcohols.
This vineyard produces true mountain wines. Duarte Georgetown wines are consistently flavorful, structured and intense.
