Down to Earth Markets was founded by Miriam Haas with social and environmental impact at its core when she launched the company’s first Ossining-based farmers market back in 1991. Out of concern for the social and environmental impact of industrial-scale farming, the lack of transparency in the global food industry, and limited access to fresh, local foods in many New York communities, she set out to connect with nearby food sources. Two Hudson Valley farmers answered her call, and together they began selling produce directly to shoppers at the weekly market.
Today, Down to Earth Markets operates farmers markets across Westchester, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Drawing upon our decades of experience, Down to Earth Markets curates our markets carefully to ensure shoppers get an exciting diversity of regionally grown, locally crafted products. Every community we serve is distinct. From site planning to vendor selection to promoting the markets weekly, we get to know each host environment. Our markets reflect their unique surroundings and create special places for neighbors to meet, shop, and connect.
Down to Earth Markets is a mission-driven Certified B Corp., committed to using business as a power for good. In keeping with the B Corp. Declaration of Interdependence, we consider our impact on our community, employees and the environment with every business decision we make. We are dedicated to creating economic opportunities for local, small-scale farmers and artisanal food processors; celebrating our food culture together to enhance community life; and cultivating knowledge, awareness, and best practices amongst consumers and producers to bolster the local food economy. For us, the word local means, “to market and back in a day".
