Tamralipta, presently known as Tamluk 80 Km away from Kolkata, was a great sea port at the estuary of the Ganges, though the river shifted a few Km. away to east from Tamluk due to various geological factors.
We find the name Tamralipta as one of the most holy places in our great epics Mahabharata, Brambha Puran and so on which were composed before 5000 B.C. As this was at the estuary of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal, Tamralipta port became the only way of voyage from eastern and north India. The king of Bengal, Singhabahu Bijoy Singh invaded Srilanka on 477 B.C. by using the sea route only. After Lord Buddha his disciples started spreading Buddhism and following them Indian merchants started business in those areas, like Java, Sumatra, Borneo using the sea route when European voyagers not even crossed Red-sea. In his narration on 226 B.C. Alexsanders commander in chief Nearchus could not find any ship in Indian rivers other than transport and fishing boats. Whereas chiness mendisent Hiouen Thsung found many ships and ship building factories around Tamralipta port. This indicates the ships were the only transport to sea while boats were used in inland in those days.
