DART by teledx.org is a web platform based software that aims to automatedly detect signs of retina diseases in digital images using artificial intelligence in order to prevent them in early stages.
Nearly 10% of population suffers from diabetes, and the only way to prevent diabetic-retinopathy-driven blindness is by an annual eye fundus exam. Due to the gap between diabetic population and ophthalmologists, even in developed countries this exam's coverage falls short of 50%. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR) allows to prevent, through timely treatment, vision problems almost totally. Besides, it is estimated that approximately 30% of diabetic patients have DR, which is why there's a significant rate of patients to rule out. By means of digital images analysis, a remote, massive and automated screening system is proposed to solve the lack of coverage and the bottlenecks of the (public) healthcare systems, while ophthalmologists' capabilities in blindness prevention treatment are better utilized.
