Investigative data journalism on the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on California's state prisons and county jails
We collect and analyze COVID-19 data from correctional facilities in California using freedom of information laws and public sources such as open data portals or Sheriff's Department websites.
Our work has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, Mercury News, CalMatters among other publications, and our data is available on the UCLA School of Law’s COVID-19 tracker for carceral facilities across the United States.
Our partners and supporters include Hadar Aviram - Professor of Law at UC Hastings, the Davis Vanguard, and the UCLA Law COVID Behind Bars Project.
