Conservation Synergies combines significant practical experience with innovation by bringing evidence-based ideas from other fields to support governments & partners to better deliver conservation impact. We achieve this by partnering with experts from other fields, including inter alia Social-Anthropologists, Criminologists, Organised Crime Investigators, Prosecutors, Governance Advisors, Leadership mentors.
Current projects include:
- Working with WWF-Khetha to understand the dynamics of corruption in the GLTFCA & to develop approaches to build resilience to corruption & improve conservation impact
- Technical advice to a regional 6-project USAID counter-wildlife crime program, on specific issues (by drawing on a network of experts) e.g. corruption, community-engagement, investigations & prosecutions, behaviour change, gender approaches, building partnerships for sustainability
- Supporting & facilitating meetings for a sub-regional four-country government platform that comes together to share information, intelligence, strategies & knowledge on wildlife crime (with GIZ support).
Completed projects include:
- Supporting the Govt of Mozambique on CITES policy development
- Working with WWF-Khetha to develop an innovative community crime prevention approach based on lessons from Criminology to tackle rhino & elephant poaching in the GLTFCA
- Supporting TRAFFIC with sociological & criminological inputs for an innovative research project ( https://www.traffic.org/publications/reports/the-people-beyond-the-poaching/)
- Training SADC journalists on IWT
- Providing input on IWT & other organised crime networks in key countries for the ENACT / GI Organised Organised Crime Index for Africa
- Strategic planning & proposal development for World Bank & INL proposals
- Advising the Government of Somaliland on CWT strategies & their PA system
- Supporting national NGO's in the region with strategy development, organizational strengthening & fundraising
