Community Connections Australia is a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee. Established as Residential Care Inc. in 1987 to move people with disabilities out of institutions and congregate care living circumstances into their own households into community based accommodation the name was changed in 2001 to better reflect the beliefs that drive our service delivery.
Underpinning its service delivery is a philosophy that wherever possible, people should be able to live in their own households with people of their choice and receive services that assist and increase their autonomy and independence. This requires that services be flexible and individualised. Given that most of the population flourish best in their own home environments it follows that wherever possible, people with disabilities should also live with the people of their own choice in similar circumstances as the rest of the community.
We believe that the people we support rely on this organisation for their accommodation options, but on the community for their quality of life overall. We have seen people blossom and grow because they are now part of their community as individuals who are known and valued by other people who are not part of ‘service world’. For this reason, we have concentrated on building skills and confidence so that people can move around their changing and chosen communities so as to become independent and aware of their rights and responsibilities.
