Our story starts with two friends - a couple of chicken nerds - on a quest to find the ultimate taste. Their travels took them to America’s deep south…
…where they eventually found 'Willie Mae's', in New Orleans, Louisiana. Now, Willie Mae's is a quirky wooden shack on the outskirts of town in a depressed area, badly affected in 2005 by hurricane Katrina. This humble establishment is widely regarded as serving the best chicken in America, with numerous awards and a devoted following. As they enjoyed the delicious chicken and congratulated each other on their discovery, two momentous ideas occurred to them. Firstly, to open their own restaurant with a view to stealing Willie Mae's crown and secondly, that they had actually enjoyed the quest for Chiktopia more than actually discovering it. Chiktopia for them was not a destination, but the ‘state of happiness’ that comes from being on a journey. They decided then and there that their mission would not only be to create the tastiest, ‘craviest’ chicken, but also to start a journey helping local charity partners working to make disadvantaged children’s lives better.
