The Center for Human Genetics (Centrum Menselijke Erfelijkheid) is active in three domains: research, teaching and health services. The center focuses on hereditary diseases, cancer and neurological disorders. Its collaborators want to gain a better insight into these diseases, in order to assure patients a correct and timely diagnosis and a better treatment and support.
The doctors of CME put their expertise at the patients’ disposal by making a diagnosis or by giving advice or treatment. Besides a medical approach, they also pay attention to the social, ethical, and psychological aspects. That is why very often, they work within multidisciplinary teams.
The researchers of CME conduct leading research into several areas of the life sciences, particularly molecular genetics, cellular biology, and developmental biology. They also develop technologies to support clinical and fundamental genetic research, both Belgian and international.
The staff members of CME are also involved in the academic training of doctors, geneticists, biologists, bioengineers, laboratory technologists, pharmacists, psychologists etc. at the KU Leuven and the schools and colleges of the KU Leuven Association.
CME is a department within the Group Biomedical Sciences of the KU Leuven. Several research groups within CME are part of VIB (het Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie). CME is also in charge of the genetic counselling at the UZ Leuven.
