The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement and related services to all of the citizens of the county, including the municipalities of Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Midland and Mount Pleasant. Both Concord and Kannapolis operate police departments that provide primary law enforcement services to the citizens of those municipalities. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office provides supplemental services to these municipalities, when needed. Sheriff Van W. Shaw has been in office for 4 years and leads an authorized strength of 420 employees, compromised by sworn officers with full powers of arrest, detention officers, & civilians. There are also active auxiliary officers, made up mostly of retired officers.
The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office maintains the only detention center in Cabarrus County, which has a maximum jail population of 576 in the main jail, and and auxiliary facility on-site with a maximum population of 96, for a combined total of 672.
