CLOCC is an initiative by Avfall Norge, with ISWA (International Solid Waste Association) as implementing partner. We are supported by Norad, and part of the Norwegian development programme to combat marine plastic pollution. Our partners include InSWA (Indonesia Solid Waste Association), Hand in Hand Sweden and Hand in Hand India.
Our goal is to reduce marine plastic pollution through improving waste management on land in countries that serve as significant sources of unmanaged waste into the oceans. Our approach is Integrated Sustainable Waste Management (ISWM).
Plastic pollution continues to grow rapidly, and only 9 % of the plastics are recycled. The vast majority is subject to local disposal and dumping practises, and large quantities end up in the oceans through waterways. We currently work in Indonesia. CLOCC will also be implemented in India.
Our core objective is to build capacity of local authorities in charge of waste management in regions and communities where we can achieve the most impact, so that they can develop strong Waste Management Plans (WMPs). We believe in transferring knowledge from highly skilled international and local waste management practitioners and experts, in a range of topics that are fundamental to develop strong waste management.
We do this through utilising a blended learning approach, consisting of a combination of in-person and digital trainings, seminars, workshops, field trips, digital lectures, elearning and videos. This way, we build capacity and skills on the local level, which is key to achieving sustainable improved waste management.
We believe that there is no “one size fits all” in waste management. All solutions must be tailored to fit local conditions including geography, inhabitants, economic structure, responsibilities and maangement of municipal solid waste.
