Blood Bikes Wales is an entirely voluntary organisation and registered charity (registered charity number: 1143352) that provides a free of charge motorcycle courier service to the NHS for the transportation of blood, blood products, samples, medicines, surgical equipment, notes and human breast milk.
Our volunteers compliment the NHS own courier system by offering out of hours, weekend and holiday cover. We also provide an interim day service in some areas with a week night services in three areas. This saves the NHS spending a considerable amount on taxi and courier services which can then be used for frontline patient care. We estimate that for each pound we receive in donations, the NHS will save at least five pounds.
We have formal agreements with 5 of the NHS trusts in Wales: Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board , Cwm Taf University Health Board, Hywel Dda, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and also support the other two, Powys Teaching Health Board and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
We are the largest Blood Bike group in the UK and Northern Ireland and have been told we are the biggest all volunteer charity in the country.
Blood Bikes Wales is a member of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes which shares our quest to provide a reliable, free, high quality service to health trusts throughout the country.
