Explorchestra is a musical ensemble committed to sparking interest in new music by giving composers and musicians of all backgrounds the opportunity to create music in a structured environment. Explorchestra performs exclusively original works in a wide range of musical styles.
Explorchestra was founded in 2009 and grew quickly due to immediate recognition by campus residential communities, local musicians, and various student groups. Today, the ensemble offers numerous opportunities in composition, performance, and conducting for Binghamton University students. New and experienced composers learn their craft right from their fellow musicians. Performers are driven by the excitement of playing completely original music under the baton of a peer composer. Numerous other functions within the group - library management, technology and recording, conducting, public relations - allow members to explore the various aspects of the music production process. Talented college students and committed high school musicians, singers/songwriters, electronic artists, and folk musicians find the low-stress, collaborative Explorchestra environment to be the ideal on-campus musical outlet. Musicians who demonstrate consistent dedication work directly with the composers on complex solo and improvisational parts that enhance and drive the sound of the orchestra.
Collaboration, focused rehearsal, and musical diversity are the key elements to Explorchestra’s success. Since its humble beginnings, Explorchestra has performed for every campus community and numerous student groups. Explorchestra has also supported causes such as The Equality Project, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, and many other organizations. Explorchestra is fortunate to be recognized and supported by the Student Association and the BU Music Department.
