The world needs business at its best - helping to fix urgent problems like climate change and inequality. The Better Business Act would transform the way Britain does business so that every single company takes ownership of its social and environmental impact.
At a time when we face many urgent challenges, we want to change the law so that it is no longer an option for business to pursue profit at the expense of workers, communities and the environment.
By amending Section 172 of the Companies Act, we will update the job description for company directors, making it their responsibility to protect people and the planet at the same time as pursuing profit. We know that a majority of directors want this too.
The amendment would provide a firm legal basis for directors to advance the interests of society and the environment alongside those of shareholders. This would in turn provide a clear framework for business to engage with the many existing initiatives that seek to drive up standards.
A small change in the law will make a big change in the world. It will allow businesses to make decisions in all of our long term interests, helping to create a fairer, greener future for all.
