The university currently offers around 40 degree programmes in disciplines ranging from the fine arts through design, visual communication, media design and media studies to computer science as well as architecture, civil engineering, building material science, environmental engineering, and business management.
The State Bauhaus, the most influential design school of the twentieth century, was founded in Weimar back in 1919. In those days, leading experts from different disciplines and countries worked here together with their students to revolutionise education and had a lasting impact on the design of our living world. They developed an answer to the key questions in art, culture and society of their time – modernity.
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has been building on this history since 1996 as an international interdisciplinary university based in the unique cultural town of Weimar. Studies, research, art and teaching draw on the great Bauhaus model to find answers to central questions in art and culture, technology, science and society using modern methods. The inclusion of »Bauhaus« in the university’s name thus to this day indicates its willingness to experiment, openness, creativity and internationality.
