Anamnesis : Stories told in rugs by Naz Azodi
A shared narrative experience exploring the importance of memories and identity through the tradition of weaving. This is a collaboration with four Iranian tribal women, in a show of rugs, using the power of recollection and the art of weaving to tell their personal stories. The project culminated with an exhibition in Tehran, followed by New York, and will travel to other cities in the US in the coming year. The show is accompanied by a short film and book highlighting the weavers, workshops, and journey of the project.
Anamnesis is a socially conscious project with its heartstrings tied to the love of Iran, community, and textiles. The urgency in highlighting this craft, and the women who master it, is not only to prevent it from vanishing but to also form a collective of weavers that can reinstate the magic and the lore in a practice that’s an important part of nomadic culture in Iran. In using the power of recollection we hope to ignite in them an intrinsic desire that has always been part of the Iranian weaving tradition, to tell stories.
We had our debut in Tehran during a week-long run in December of 2019 at Studio Nopa and we premiered in the US as part of New York Textile month In September of 2020. More showings to follow!
