Alusera is developing a patent pending technology for the modification of the surface layer of aluminum, in which it will give the surface photo-luminescent characteristics. In other words, Alusera develops a new kind of aluminum that will “glow” in the dark.
The current photo-luminescent technique is most often seen in products such as non-electrical emergency and evacuation products and represents a market estimated to reach 4.2 billion SEK in the end of year 2011. These products have the capacity to store light whenever it’s exposed to any source of light. When the light source fails or stops the materials release the stored light and “glows”. This is today done by painting these products with photo-luminescent paint or dyes which is a time-consuming and expensive extra process.
The Alusera idea is to make the aluminum metal glow. There will be no paint or dye. Instead, Alusera intends to integrate the process of making aluminum glow into the anodization stage of aluminum production. The motivation to replace the current technology is to lower the cost as the new technology will save 60% of the total production cost. Initially, Alusera will focus on two target product categories, emergency egress systems and stair-nosings, and application areas could be broadened with a wider range of products in the future.
